GP: Prague expands its environmental zone - Czech PDF Print E-mail

Since the experience with the two environmental zones in Prague was proved successful, they have now been extended within Trendsetter.

czPraha_env_zoneBefore Trendsetter, the City of Prague had an access restriction zone for vehicles over 3.5 tons in the inner city centre and a larger zone around this zone with access restriction for vehicles over 6 tons. In the central area exceptions are made for delivery vehicles and buses to centrally located hotels.

Since the experience with environmental zones has proved successful in Prague and there was a need to curb negative environmental impact from the traffic, the city decided to widen the zone prohibited for vehicles over 6 tons.

Feasibility studies have optimised the design of the zones, taking both transportation demand and access needs into consideration. The studies have also considered changed transportation flows due to the construction of a new city ring.

This Trendsetter measure included:

* a feasibility study to determine the optimal area for the environmental zone
* information campaigns to ensure support within the concerned districts of the city
* realisation of the new environmental zones
* measurements of the traffic situation before and after the extension

The environmental zone for vehicles over 6 t in Prague was extended to almost the double size. This successful measure has resulted in less heavy traffic, and thus less pollution and road wear and tear. The evaluation of the extended zones shows significant reductions of energy use and emissions of CO2, NOx and particles as well as reduction of noise levels. The obedience level in the new part of the zone is roughly 50 %.

This measure was mainly produced by the Institute of Transport Engineering of The City of Prague. The Trendsetter budget covers internal staff costs whereas durable investments such as traffic signs amounting to about 100 000 Euro are financed outside of Trendsetter by the City of Prague.

TRENDSETTER's objectives are to ameliorate urban air quality and noise levels, and congestion while supporting exceptional mobility and urban quality of life. It will help other cities to see how they can curb unsustainable traffic growth by using advanced mobility management schemes.
