Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor (SEA-AIC)

Summary

In the framework of the Stability Pact a new transport corridor along the Adriatic-Ionian Coast, connecting Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Yugoslavia(Montenegro), Albania and Greece, was defined. This transport corridor allows the use of three different modes of transport: road, rail and coastal shipping. The environmental impacts of the different transport modes differ considerably. Therefore a Strategic Environmental Assessment based on the multimodal approach applied in the SEA of the Danube corridor is seen, as an appropriate method in order to define the optimal solution for future transport infrastructure needs along the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor.The objectives of the project are, therefore:

- the application of a multi modal Strategic Environmental Assessment;
- the identification of the key impacts of the different solutions on the Adriatic-Ionic Corridor, including their impact on greenhouse gas emissions; and
- the identification of an optimal solution for the transport corridor based on the 'column' approach based on environmental, social and economic impacts.
