GP: New parking fee system reduce traffic in Pécs - Hungary PDF Print E-mail

A new parking fee system with zones has cut down traffic in Pécs inner city. The zone system makes parking in the centre expensive. More people now use public transport and the environmental, living and working conditions have improved.

It used to be impossible to park in the whole city centre of Pécs. People coming to work in the centre parked their cars and left them there for the whole day. During daytime, car-drivers tried to find free space – without result – and the city centre was always full with cars looking for parking space. This resulted in unnecessary congestion, emissions of green house gases and other pollutants. Since parking was free, no income was generated.

Within Trendsetter, the parking system has been completely revised. Parking tickets machines have been purchased and the city is now divided into four parking zones:

* red zone for the core of the inner city = expensive parking with limited parking time
* blue zone adjacent to the red zone = moderately priced parking
* yellow zone for the distant parts of the city centre = rather low parking fee
* green zone for outside the city centre = free parking

Apart from the installation of new parking machines, the reforms within Trendsetter include street marking according to the new regulations, installation of information boards, expanding of green areas in the inner city and an increase of free parking spaces outside the city centre.

The new parking system has reduced the number of cars in the inner city. Those who come can almost always find a free parking place immediately. Many more people also travel with public transportation. The extra revenues are partly spent on modernisation of the public transport fleet.

Without the new parking system, it would be unattractive to park, live and spend the free-time in the centre of Pécs, as there has been a 10% growth of cars in Hungary during the last four years. The traffic burden would make the living and working circumstances considerably worse, which would have negative impact on the health and quality of life.

Saving the World Heritage in the city centre from emissions was a strong argument that made it easier to reach public acceptance for expensive parking in the centre. The municipality also officially declared that all revenue generated by the parking system will go to new parking infrastructure.
