GP: The First Cycling Road in Chisinau - Moldova PDF Print E-mail

It the autumn of 2005 in Chisinau, for the first time, was inaugurated a road for cyclists. Having a length of 11 km, it starts at the intersection of Stefan cell Mare bd. (the main street of Chisinau) and Ciuflea Str., continuing on the viaduct – Dacia bd., until the so-called “City’s Gates”.

Marking lane has a surface of 900 m2 and includes 43 road indicators. The construction of the first road for cyclists in Moldova lasted almost one year, the total value of the project being estimated at 132 thousand MD Lei (10,500 USD).

The Chisinau Territorial Organization of the Ecological Movement of Moldova with the financial support of UNDP Moldova and DAAC-Velo-Sport Company implemented the above-mentioned project.

Dozens of cyclists, participants in the cycling tour of the ecologists from Europe „Bike Tour Ecotopia”, participated in the official opening ceremony of the Cycling Road in Chisinau. They supported this initiative and declared that the opening of a special road for cyclists is a real support for the supporters of environment friendly transport and principles for sustainable development, thus the traffic security of cyclists being assured.

According to the majority of participants at this tour, such actions help to increase the interest of population in using the alternative means of transportation. The officials present at the opening ceremony mentioned that this was the first step for creation of new cycling roads in other districts of our capital.
