otherpayment_BucharestObjectives/ Innovative aspects

Increase the public transport attractiveness by implementing fare integration and a flexible fare policy, making use of contactless card technology. Ensure the payment for more services by using a single card.

The measures

In order to increase the public transport attractiveness, RATB intends to improve its services by offering the possibility to make other payments using the same smartcards as for public transport. These services could be the car-sharing access, small shopping, parking fee payment etc.

Implementation status

After the implementation of the contact less card for ticketing and payment in public transport, the number of services will be increased to increase the usefulness of the card. The tender for the systems integrator of the ticketing and payment system was organized in November 2004. RATB has developed a marketing campaign to promote the new card and its related services The first design proposals for the cards have been prepared.

(Expected) results

The timing of the introduction of the other payment services depends on the implementation of the contactless smartcard. The other services are expected to be functional at the end of 2005. By offering other different payment services, RATB intends to increase the attractiveness of the offered service, the final goal being the increase of the public transport use. The benefits of this demonstration will be important for the public transport operator as well as for the other actors involved in this project.
