European ports and their multimodal transport partners are more and more forced to increase operational efficiency, to adjust administration and management structures and to increase regional awareness. This is a result of politically driven deregulation, increased competition and the necessity to switch, for environmental and cost reasons, traffic from road to maritime, inland water and rail transport. But which administrative structures and what kind of infrastructure financing work best to meet future requirements? The partners involved in PORT-NET want to find answers to these questions by exchanging experience and best practice and thus improve the pool of knowledge of ports and related regions.

The overall objective of PORT-NET is to identify and tackle the main challenges faced by the European ports industry in order to create better operational structures and capacities and achieve the best possible regional integration of ports. Since ports are an important link in the transport chain, subobjectives are to increase the quality of port services and to encourage cost efficient and environmentally friendly maritime transportation and modern multimodal hinterland structures.

The partners share experience and know-how on port administration, management and finance, as well as on EU port policies. This upgrades the capacity of port authorities and administrations to build up modern port structure and thus lowers the risk of investment recession in the partner regions. Furthermore, the partners exchange experience and knowhow on multimodal transport structures and «state of the art» techniques for ports. The focus is on maritime cargo transportation challenges and port operations, hinterland cargo distribution and logistic centres. As a result the quality of port services is increased and the partners are better prepared to face the challenges of a global transport industry. The integration of ports and people (passengers, tourists, urban population, regional planners) is another aspect PORT-NET is dealing with. Activities include the organisation of workshops and best practice tours, supported by lectures by external experts.
Studies are produced, for example a market study on the booming passenger traffic on cruise vessels and ferries in Europe. All these activities contribute to generate higher value added services within the ports and higher employment and increased prosperity in their regions.
