GP: Clean high mobility corridor in Krakow - Poland PDF Print E-mail

Integrated policies for clean vehicle use, passenger security, ticketing, institutional innovation, new flexible services aimed at bridging the gap between high-volume public transport and individual transport, and intermodal services will be shown to keep the currently high share of public transport (60%) by improving accessibility and safety.

Objectives / Innovative Aspects

The measure concerns the increase in the quality, accessibility and attractiveness of PT (public transport), the realising of a comprehensive strategy to improve PT security and safety and the improving of PT infrastructure in the city centre, especially for elders and disabled people as well as to reduce passenger boarding and alighting time. Innovative are the clean high mobility routes, the new tram and bus stations, the integrated security concepts and the sound information about stops.

The measures

The measure will demonstrate a clean high mobility corridor. The first new CNG buses will be tested on the lines 115 and 125 - linking the new demand-responsive public transport service with the city centre. In this corridor at least two major bus and tram stations at the Lubicz St. and Rakowicka St. on the 1st ring road will be converted into two new “model” stations. On the 1st ring road in the city centre there are a lot of on-street bus or tram stops which are not safe and comfortable enough for passengers especially for elders and disabled people. The stations will be rebuilt by adjusting the height of platforms. At these stops high quality information services (variable message signs showing real time information on tram arrival, a sound information system for elder people, etc.) will be installed. Through the design improvements the safety of the passengers can be improved. There will be research and technological development activities conducted concerning the concept of the corridor, designing the new “model” bus/tram stops in Krakow and the studying of the most efficient technical systems for providing high quality information services at the new “model” stations.

Implementation status

A technical project of reconstruction of Lubicz/Rakowicka streets (including reconstruction of the public transport stops) has been made and approved. Reconstruction has started.
Concerning the reconstruction of the bus and tram stops on the 1st Road Ring (new “model” stop), one stop (and whole intersection Lubicz-Pawia Streets) is already constructed.
Next bus and tram stop (Lubicz/Rakowicka streets) is under construction.

(Expected) results

Among the expected results and targets there are the increase in patronage by 5%, the lowering of the factor of accidents by 25% on the two new “model” stops, the increase in user satisfaction by 35% and the improved road side air quality. Additionally there are some training activities for bus and tram drivers with explanations of special features of the clean high mobility corridor.
