The aim of the measure is to implement a car pooling system for commuters, working and studying at the Krakow University of Technology (PK). Thanks to the system it will be possible to increase the occupancy of private cars. The system requires the introduction of a new Internet based data information about offered free seats in cars.

The Measure

The Krakow University of Technology is responsible for the design, the implementation and the evaluation of the car pooling system. The work is organised in several phases. First, research activities, taking into consideration a public inquiry at the university, will be conducted. It is necessary to describe the present situation and the awareness of the advantages of car pooling. It will also give the answer whether there is interest among expected users and information about a general overview on users’ requirements concerning car pooling. It will help to define the basic outline of the system and to create a model solution. Next, the necessary software based on the accepted model and fulfilling the assumptions will be developed. Additionally, practical implementation of the system as well as monitoring and evaluation of its functionality will be provided. Within the measure research and technological development activities are conducted concerning the analysis of car pooling concepts in other cities or organisations in Europe. Additional investigations will take into consideration the occupancy of vehicles.

Implementation status

Implementation phase will start in 2007.

(Expected) results

Among the expected results and targets that can be easily verified are an expected number of 60 daily users, an increase of the number of travellers using the same car by 5%, a share of 30% of car owners and others interested in exchanging data about free places in their car, a decrease of traffic volume by 5% in the street network around the university campuses, a reduction by 20% of parking facilities inside the university areas. There are additionally some training activities for students and university employees involved in car pooling and for officials at the Municipality Office interesteg in participation in car pooling.
