Bicycle renting in Krakow
In order to improve the present situation of cycling Krakow decided to develop and implement a bicycle renting system, which will be a cheap solution and will work within a network of different renting places. This kind of new service is foreseen as a helpful tool to promote biking in the city centre.
Objectives / Innovative Aspects
The measure concerns the promotion of a new "bicycle culture", the launching of the city owned bicycle renting system, the increase in the use of bicycles, the integrating of the bicycle renting system with public transport stops, the purchasing of 100 city owned bikes, the searching for private funds and sponsorship. Innovative are the possibility to rent a city-bicycle, the number of renting places to take and leave a bicycle and the use of private and environment protection funds.
The aim of the measure is the purchase of bicycles by the city that will be co-financed by environmental protection funds. The system will be built based on the public transport system to integrate those two forms of transport. It should make people leaving the car and go further by bicycle. That should lower individual car traffic and make the bicycle a more popular means of transport. The aim is to establish a city owned bicycle renting system in the city centre of Krakow. The initial implementation of the free bicycle renting system in the city centre with private companies support shall increase the amount of bicycles running in the city centre. The system shall reach a number of 200 registered bike sharing users by the end of the project. The renting stations will be located next to important public transport stations in the city centre. Research and technological development activities are conducted concerning the analysis of the most appropriate locations, the bicycles and lock facilities for the bike renting system, the management of the system and the searching for additional private or environmental protection funds for launching the system.
The project of bicycle infrastructure for Krakow (including concept of bicycle renting system in Krakow) has been prepared. Currently, four locations are chosen but must be evaluated with some quantified indexes.
Among the expected results and targets that can be easily verified are the number of city owned bicycles for renting which is expected to be 100, the number of registered bike sharing users plus occasional users which is expected to be 200, the increase of bicycle use in non-pedestrian trips inside the 2nd ring road by 10% and the increased use of public transport + bike modes.
The above project is part of the CIVITAS-CARAVEL initiative.
