|GP: Monitoring Centre for Road Safety and Accident Prevention in Krakow - Poland|
In Krakow an overall concept for improving road safety and accident prevention does not yet exist. There is a system dealing with data collection about road incidents and accidents which helps to define potential risks and how to improve road infrastructure. Within this measure Krakow will set up a Monitoring Centre for Road Safety and Accident Prevention.
Objectives / Innovative Aspects
The measure concerns the establishing of the Integrated Monitoring Centre for Road Safety and Accident Prevention, a central resource and information management centre, the improving of the methodology and of technological aspects of the accident data collection, the improving of the road safety, the reduction of the number of road accidents and the improving of the way to define potential “dangerous places”. Innovations is the usage of new technologies in accident data collection.
The methodology of data collection about road accidents and the way it is used can influence also the safety and lower the number of accidents. Currently in Krakow there is a good cooperation between different stakeholders in order to gain good quality data. Year by year there is a special report on road safety produced and used to find places where something can be improved. New tools will help to improve that process and overall road accident safety factors. Krakow will set up a Monitoring Centre for Road Safety and Accident Prevention. The main objective is to develop a support system to implement operational plans to reduce accident risk in critical situations and to develop strategies to improve safety. Research and technological development activities will concern the designing of the overall architecture of the Monitoring Centre, the developing of methodologies for data collection, representation and analysis, the developing of indicators of a risk analysis, the identifying of new ways to collect accident data, the studying on how to improve the traffic risk analysis and the developing of new ways to describe the risk for new traffic solutions.
At now research activities are being developed. The research concerns the designing of the system architecture, the development of a methodology and the identification of new ways for data collection as well as the development of a risk analysis methodology.
Among the expected results and targets that can be easily verified is the particular role played by the centre in providing inter-institutional advice. Besides a reduction of road accidents by 30% is expected.
The above project is part of the CIVITAS-CARAVEL initiative.
