|GP: City Cycle Routes in Iasi - Romania|
Soft modes are essential to create a sustainable urban transport system. A lack of facilities for cyclists makes it very difficult to build a cycling culture. ARCHIMEDES will help Iasi take the first steps in this process
The City of Iasi is located in north-eastern Romania and is the second largest Romanian city, after Bucharest, with a population of 366,000 inhabitants. It is also the center of a metropolitan area, which occupies a surface of 787.87 square kilometers, encompassing a total population of 398,000 inhabitants.
Objectives / Innovative Aspects
At present Iasi does not have any dedicated cycle lanes.
By gathering information about perceived safety, user perception of bicycle parking facilities, the number of cyclists in corridor, bicycle accidents and car drivers’ awareness of the facilities to be implemented, this measure aims to reduce traffic congestion, pollution and air quality throughout the city.
This measure will see 10 km of cycling tracks introduced. These will include bicycle parking places at strategic locations. Where the cycle routes cross with roads or footpaths special colored markings will be used to designate space for cyclists. The new facilities will be supported by a promotional campaign to encourage citizens to take up cycling.
A subcontract will be issued by Iasi by march 2009 for assistance in promotion activities.
A specialized marketing company will contract and organise these promotion campaigns promoting cycling. The campaign will include maps, guides, brochures, bicycle presence in positive images and utilisation by dignitaries, personalities and a substantial and positive presence in the local press.
The measure aims to increase cycling in the corridor by 50 percent and to minimise the risk of more cycling accidents.
Data will be collected both before and after, and an impact and process evaluation will be carried out.
