GP: City Cycle Routes in Iasi - Romania PDF Print E-mail

Soft modes are essential to create a sustainable urban transport system. A lack of facilities for cyclists makes it very difficult to build a cycling culture. ARCHIMEDES will help Iasi take the first steps in this process

The City of Iasi is located in north-eastern Romania and is the second largest Romanian city, after Bucharest, with a population of 366,000 inhabitants. It is also the center of a metropolitan area, which occupies a surface of 787.87 square kilometers, encompassing a total population of 398,000 inhabitants.

Objectives / Innovative Aspects

At present Iasi does not have any dedicated cycle lanes.

By gathering information about perceived safety, user perception of bicycle parking facilities, the number of cyclists in corridor, bicycle accidents and car drivers’ awareness of the facilities to be implemented, this measure aims to reduce traffic congestion, pollution and air quality throughout the city.

The Measure

This measure will see 10 km of cycling tracks introduced. These will include bicycle parking places at strategic locations. Where the cycle routes cross with roads or footpaths special colored markings will be used to designate space for cyclists. The new facilities will be supported by a promotional campaign to encourage citizens to take up cycling.

Implimentation Status

A subcontract will be issued by Iasi by march 2009 for assistance in promotion activities.

A specialized marketing company will contract and organise these promotion campaigns promoting cycling. The campaign will include maps, guides, brochures, bicycle presence in positive images and utilisation by dignitaries, personalities and a substantial and positive presence in the local press.

The campaign includes:

  • A bicycle presence in positive images (stars, politicians, spot broadcasts)
  • Bicycle utilisation by dignitaries and public services employees (city hall, police)
  • Bicycle mastery demonstration, bicycle market competitions, cycloball games
  • Radio-TV shows, a substantial and positive presence in the local press.

By 2011 Iasi will demonstrate routes and facilities for cyclists by adding 10 km of cycling tracks that will include cycle parking and special colored markings. The new facilities will be supported by a promotional campaign to encourage citizens to take up cycling.

(Expected) Results

The measure aims to increase cycling in the corridor by 50 percent and to minimise the risk of more cycling accidents.

Data will be collected both before and after, and an impact and process evaluation will be carried out.

The initial ideas on relevant indicators and methods to evaluate the achievements of this specific measure are:

  • number of cyclists in corridor
  • perceived safety
  • user perception of bicycle parking facilities
  • bicycle accidents
  • car drivers awareness of facilities.

On street interviews and traffic counts by Iasi are considered for the site evaluation to demonstrate the impacts of the measure.
