GP: Implementation of real time passenger information system at 10 PT stops, Bucharest - Romania PDF Print E-mail

Objectives/ Innovative aspects

realtime_bucharestImprove the service level and increase passenger satisfaction by providing real time information on vehicle location. The final goal of this demonstration is to increase the usage of the public transport service by offering our customers a quality service.

The measures

At the moment, passengers can not obtain realtime information about public transportation. RATB does not have on-board automatic devices for passengers counting.

Implementation status

The tender documentation was finalised and the international tender for a system integrator was organised in November 2004. The software for offering real time information has been improved. At the moment, 26 tramway stops (the route no. 41) have been endowed with displays for real time information. This system will be integrated with the prioritisation system for trams at crossings. Currently, the system is operational and uses inductive loops for tram identification. The communication with the information displays is transmitted through optical fibre. The information provided on the displays consists of the number of minutes until the next tram arrives.

Expected results

The real time information system will be integrated with the AVL system that is based on GPS technology. Another 5 information displays will be installed on stops of tram-route 32.
This demonstration improves the public transport reliability. It will provide valuable information to both passengers and the public transport operator. Special attention will be paid to the evaluation for the future extension of the system throughout the entire stop network. The evaluation will be based mainly on surveys about system acceptance. The evaluation could provide to RATB useful information about the offered service in order to contribute to its further improvement.
