GP: Implementation of the automatic vehicle location (AVL) system, Bucharest - Romania PDF Print E-mail

Objectives/ Innovative Aspects

AVL_bucharestIncreasing the efficiency of public transport by implementing GPS technology to obtain real time information on vehicle location.

The measures

The actual vehicle location system is old and unreliable, using radio signposts mounted on pillars. A new location system based on up-to-date technologies is necessary to improve the quality of the service and to be able to counteract to the conditions of the huge increase of traffic in Bucharest. The new system must face the modern requirements for efficient fleet management.

Implementation status

The automated vehicle location system will be integrated with the ticketing system, giving the necessary information for the evaluation of transport demand. Anticipating the introduction of the AVL system, a study on prioritisation at crossings with traffic lights, in accordance to the traffic situation, schedule and vehicle loading degree, was carried out.

The internal preparation in order to introduce the new system has been carried out. The structure and composition of working teams for designing, installing, maintaining, commercial issues, software, etc. were established in accordance with each type of activity.

Expected results

The contract with the systems integrator will be awarded in April 2005. After that, the designing and installation of the system will be carried out.
A marketing campaign is programmed for the next period. This campaign will promote the system. One of the main objectives is to involve the RATB’ staff in supporting the right implementation and use of the new system.
