Objectives/ Innovative Aspects

Increase the public transport attractiveness, by introducing fare integration and a flexible fare policy, making use of contactless card technology. Reduction of fraud level from 25% to maximum 15% and improving the efficiency of PT.

The Measures

RATB uses paper tickets and cancelling machines, an old technology that is no longer efficient. There is no fare integration between the surface and underground public transport operators.

Implementation Status

In total 2000 vehicles will be equipped with the new devices for contact-less ticketing and payment. 65 points of sale will be established. A public international open tender for a system integrator was organized in November 2004. The two public transport operators in Bucharest, RATB and METROREX have reached agreement on fare integration and technical integration of their ticketing systems. Passengers will be able to use the same card for all urban public transport modes. RATB has developed a marketing campaign in order to promote the new ticketing system The first design proposals for the new ticketing system’s cards have been prepared. All internal preparations are in order to be able to make a quick start once the contract with a systems integrator has been signed.

(Expected) Results

After singing the contract with the system integrator, the designing and installation of the system will be carried out. The goal of the marketing campaign is to promote the system and to involve the passengers in supporting its right implementation and use.
