Bioethanol in Ukrainian Petrol
April 11, 2012: Yuri Boiko, Ukraine’s Minister for Energy and Coal Industry has introduced a bill placing a requirement to add 5% of bioethanol to petrol starting from 2013; in 2014 the percentage is to increase to 7%. Boiko believes that this step will reduce dependence on oil imports, on the one hand, and on the other, create more jobs in the agricultural sector. As early as last year the Minister for Agriculture voiced the government’s plans to aim production of beetroot at producing more bioethanol; since Ukrainian sugar is unpopular on the market, it is more expedient to use it for producing bioethanol, to increase sustainability and improve petrol quality.
