New, integrated, bus terminal, Alba Iulia (Romania)

Timescales: April 2011 to March 2015

This project was implemented by Societatea de Transport Public Alba Iulia (STP) and aimed to construct a new, modern and ‘green’ bus terminal on the site of the old bus station. The new bus terminal was part of a broader strategy to reduce the amount of car traffic in the city, so also provided ‘park-and-ride’ facilities at the new bus station, and was supported by measures introduced by the local authority aimed at discouraging car use in the city centre.

The new bus terminal is well located, as it is close to the main entrance to the town and to the main railway station, so will enable intermodal travel using bus and train. The terminal will obtain its power from renewable energy sources and will contain all the facilities necessary for a modern public transport hub, including modern waiting rooms, tourist information and general information panels, as well as a shopping area and food court. In addition to supporting public transport use, the new terminal also aims to support cycling and walking: it is possible to rent a bicycle at the bus terminal, while coloured walking routes show pedestrians the way from the terminal to the city’s tourist sites, its shopping centre and its public institutions.

The park-and ride element of the new development will enable those driving to Alba Iulia from surrounding villages to park their car for free at the bus terminal and then continue their journey using other modes. The provision of these free spaces will be complemented by local authority measures aimed at deterring parking in the city centre, including parking restrictions, increasing parking charges and preventing the more polluting cars from accessing the city centre.

- Increase of 25% in public transport users

- Reducing car traffic in the city

- Reducing levels of air pollution, CO2 emissions and noise
