GP: Reduction of motorised vehicles in area of natural beauty (Logar Valley Landscape Park, Slovenia) PDF Print E-mail

Timescales: OngoingLogarska dolina - logo

Logarska dolina Solčavsko

Objectives:

• Reduction of motorised traffic;
• Regulation of tourist access;
• Support for the development of other infrastructure; and
• Protection of the natural environment.

The Logar Valley Landscape Park is located north of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, near the Austrian border. The amount of individual motorised transport was causing problems for residents and visitors, including the level of unauthorised car parking. This was also having a detrimental effect on the natural environment and of people’s enjoyment of the valley.

In order to address this problem, the municipalities of Solčava and Luče, with support from the national government and the European Union, introduced an entry charge to the valley for motorised vehicles. On the other hand, those entering the valley using a non-motorised vehicle were not charged for entry.

The charging scheme is operated on a non-profit basis by Logarska d.o.o.. Any additional revenue from the scheme - above what is needed to fund its operation - is used for the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, tourist infrastructure and the implementation of sustainable development programmes for the Solčavsko region.
