THE PEP report on Green and Healthy Jobs PDF Print E-mail

The Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP) published a report on jobs in green and healthy transport in April 2014. The report was produced as part of THE PEP's programme on jobs in green and healthy transport and was based on a literature review of the evidence for job creation resulting from investment in green and healthy transport modes. It focused on the potential job creation from public transport, cycling and walking. An analysis of the available evidence suggested that these modes could be significant employers and contributors to the green economy.

On the basis of the available evidence, the potential for job creation from cycling was estimated. This assumed that one major city from each country in the pan-European region achieved the same level of cycling as the Danish capital, Copenhagen, with the same proportionate level of job creation related to cycling. On the basis of this calculation, it was estimated that an additional 76,600 jobs might be created if the selected cities reached Copenhagen's levels of cycling. In addition, the benefits of cycling to health could prevent about 10,000 early deaths each year. These figures are likely to be underestimates, as they correspond to only one city per country and to only a small proportion of the jobs that could contribute to making transport greener, safer and more efficient.

The report can be downloaded in English, French and Russian versions from WHO's website.
